Ann Walsh Quilting

I found the most delightful and uplifting blog this morning and could not wait one more minute to share with you.  With every post, she offers supportive comments and urges herself and others to do what we love.   Ann Walsh Quilting go see and enjoy.

Ann started quilting only a short three years ago and wow....has she hit the road running.   The more I read of her journey, the more I wanted/needed to read....smiling all the way.    Beginning with her Podcast interview with Leah Day, how she started, her struggles, her self-doubt....her growth as a quilter....how she considers herself  an introvert who quilted herself to exhaustion.

With the meander stitch as a beginning, Ann learned control, then moved herself into loops and swirls and feathers.  Along the way, she learned that she had to overcome perfection, discovering that she was robbing herself of joy.  She wholeheartedly believes that  practice should make progress - not perfection.

Don't stop with the Podcast....go to Ann Walsh Quilting and feel my joy in discovering this heartwarming blog.

Book Review ~

Just one more book to covet ~  And it's a good one:  Kaffe Fassett's Quilts In Italy is just one of over 20 of his publications.

There's also Quilts in the Sun....in Ireland....in America....in Provence...in Sweden.  But anyway, back to Quilts In Italy where inspiration was found on page 54 for my newest quilt top....a log cabin variation of Kaffe's Stone Log Cabin...pictured below.

While I loved the multiple use of his fabrics and the smaller log cabin strips in the quilt, there was not enough yardage in my Kaffe Fassett fabric stash to duplicate this quilt.

What is a quilter to do?   Well, of course, the obvious -  just be inspired by what you see and get sewing to make your own with what's on hand.

It started out with a 10" by 18" remnant I picked up in the Villa Rosa Designs shop at Houston Quilt Festival.  These little cancan dancers set the tone for the frivolity of the rest of the logs.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason for each addition, nor the size thereof, except that I had enough of each additional fabric to get the log cabin surround finished at 80" x 88".

Quilts In Italy...a refreshing view of 20 quilt designs and easy to follow instructions for the novice quilter and beyond.   It gets a thumbs up from this sewing station.

Recording Quilters' Stories. May the stories never end ~

Now might be the best time....if you are not already a member of , then now might be the best time to donate or join.  Quilt Alliance  came together in 1993  to meet a need to record the stories of  quilts and quilt makers, to keep the stories safe and to share them with the world.

Here's a teaser of an upcoming interview

The benefit of now is that StoryBee will be traveling to Quiltville in Episode 10 to visit with Bonnie Hunter followed in mid-December with a visit with the maker of exquisite quilts  Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry.

You know how it goes....membership has its privileges.  Making a generous $30 donation by November 30 will get you a chance to win Bonnie's latest book, String Frenzy, and a chance to win an issue of Quiltfolk.   Joining by December 30 will get you Bonnie's Garlic Knots quilt pattern.

There is so much to be learned from quilts and quilt makers and the performance of Quilt Alliance is spectacular.

Here is an excerpt of just one interview found in the Quilt Alliance archives.

PA: Kathy, will you tell me about the quilt you brought today?

KY: The quilt I brought today is called 'Fifty Female and Fearless'. It's a quilt that is very meaningful to me because it shows a bicycle rider with her arms outstretched riding on a bike and often I ride my bike like this with my hands off the steering wheels. It's all about balance and being able to take risk and kind of being fearless to embrace the world. To me, that's sort of a metaphor for my approach to art quilting because you have to balance your quilting with your life and you have to be willing to take risks and learn new techniques. You have to be fearless because sometimes making art evokes a certain fear. There's a fear of success. There's a fear of failure. There's a fear of having an idea and not being able to represent your idea the way it is in your head. Maybe your skills aren't good enough....................

Go Tell It ~

Torch sent me a link to Quilters' Alliance.Org and I'll soon get back around to sharing that information BUT, for today, I found these quilters who are telling their story about their quilt in 3 minutes or less.   As they say, there's always a story.    For example, here is Trisha Frankland who tells her story about one quilt in under 3 minutes.....quilts that bond quilters.

and then a sad quilt story, but one that must be shared, less we forget.  Jeanne Hewell-Chambers at Houston Quilt Festival, 2017 talks about Aktion T4 and how the victims are being remembered in quilts being made....one at a time....around the world.

We all have quilt stories to share.   Go forth and help preserve the art of quilting.

Mary Elizabeth Kinch, Let me catch my breath ~

A big thank you from Quilters' Guild Acadienne to Mary Elizabeth Kinch for spending the past several days with us sharing  her love of quilt-making.  Mary Elizabeth professes to be an interior designer by day but a quilter by night.   She lectures, she teaches, she designs fabric and quilts and has co-authored two best sellers,    Small Blocks, Stunning Quilts and Small Pieces, Spectacular Quilts.

Mary Elizabeth began Thursday morning by saying right out loud that every one of us has the ability to be creative....oftentimes it just takes encouragement.  That's exactly what Mary Elizabeth did as she continued luring us in with her fabulous trunk show/program.   She encouraged us by sharing her love of antique quilts and how she used  her analysis of them to execute the plans for her next antique  quilt replica.

 Mary Elizabeth Kinch

I nabbed Mary Elizabeth before the program began to get this picture of her modern sampler.  The narrow string border intrigued me.  Notice that there are half-square triangles along with what perhaps might be 1" all the way up to 6"  fabric cuts pieced together.....particularly the long blue strip that wraps around the corner.

I also found interesting the lighter shades within the courthouse steps block almost disappear into the white background.  Yes, interesting when we as quilt makers and artists so often feel compelled to have definitions rather than blurred lines.

Just give Mary Elizabeth a string or two and see what she does!  A very modern take on an ever so traditional quilt design.

Mary Elizabeth Kinch

Inspired by Amish quilts and their makers....and the importance of "ish"....meaning that the large outer borders don't exactly measure the same.  They are 12" ish or so.  Mary Elizabeth is a stickler for measuring, cutting, sewing, pressing accuracy....so why the "ish" theory?   Let your viewing  eye be the judge.

Mary Elizabeth Kinch

And while you think you might be viewing a near solid medallion center triangle....well, let's take a closer look.

Mary Elizabeth Kinch

The entire triangle as well as the tan cornerstones are 1" ers pieced together.  Takes my breath away to think of the time involved.

Mary Elizabeth prefaced the showing of her next quilt by emphasizing the importance of finishing those UFOs.  She (frankly) says they do us no good except to take up very usable brain space!  What's a quilter to do?  Sort those unfinished blocks and quilts, finish those we love and donate those we don't.  Allow someone else to love them on to completion.  It's just that simple!

Having said that, here is Cocktails in the Library.  Mary Elizabeth says this one started with a block sampler taken away from a Gwen Marston workshop.  Don't you see the books....on the shelf....in the library with cocktails!

Mary Elizabeth Kinch

Just  as simple as taking a theme and flowing with it....foundation pieced strings on curry.

Mary Elizabeth Kinch

or testing your color combo's....spotlight the blues, remembering that blues are dark and light and aqua and can lean toward shades of mauve and purple and lavender.

Mary Elizabeth Kinch

It was about here in the program that Mary Elizabeth talked to us about forming a posse.  A support posse that is!   We are at our best when surrounded by people who encourage and support and when asked will offer opinions and ideas that will help us to grow as artisans.    Know yourself....your personal design data base and what influences your style.

Mary Elizabeth also shared a story about an author's regimen of when to work and when to step out of the zone.   The author starts early in the morning, works till noon, takes a break, walks around the block.    Are you a morning person? Then be in your element and start designing and stitching while fresh.   Running into a snag?  Take a break, have lunch, get outside and take a walk around the block to solve those troubling problems.   If it works for a well known author, then we can also play that game.

And then there were workshops....two fun-filled days learning more about Mary Elizabeth and her techniques and her lessons in color value.

Foothills Quilt  was inspired by a late 1800's Canadian antique quilt with ever so interesting design elements and delightful quirks.   In the workshop, Mary Elizabeth emphasized the role of color and value and how sashing and borders can be a game changer.   Read more about her foothills quilt quilt-along here on her blog.

Saturday's  workshop was filled with Pumpkin Peels.  Oh, how fun!

It was a whirlwind trip for Mary Elizabeth, starting in Canada with stops in and around Houston and Beaumont, then over to Louisiana.....three days in Lafayette, then spending her last days in New Orleans before flying  home.   Mary Elizabeth, we so enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again.

BOM #9 - Wind Blown Square

This quilt block is known by several different names – Wind Blown Square, Windblown Star, Whirlpool, Balkan Puzzle, and Sea Glass to name a few.

The earliest mention of the block I could find listed the block name as Whirpool and was found in a quilt in Maine in 1778, but I was unable to locate a picture or location of this quilt.

The Ladies Art Company published a quilt pattern catalog in 1897 which included 400 different block designs.  Many of the block names used in this publication are still with us today and some have evolved into different names by designers and publishers as well as regional names for the same design. This block design was listed as block #334 under the name Mosaic #6

Ruby McKim published this pattern in 1931.  The block also shows up in the catalog of Nancy Cabot in the Chicago Tribune under the name of Balkan Puzzle and Windblown Star in 1933 and Flowing Ribbons in 1935.  It was also called Whirlpools in 1935 in the Birmingham News by Nancy Page.
In Nancy Cabot’s publication about the block under the name Windblown Star she did not have a lot to say except “it could be traced to a quaint, seaside town in Maine.”  Due to this description the block also became known as Sea Glass after the depression.

Today if you go looking for reference to Sea Glass quilts you will find everything under the sun except this design!  This name has been used for many different blocks and quilt patterns, a good example of how block names and designs evolve over time.

Whacky Wednesday ~

A mid-week day is always a great day to get whacky! whacky with those fat quarters, that is.   Leah Day's fat quarter stack and whack four patch quilt is a great start to the rest of the week.  Leah makes the math easy when she answers the question.....how many blocks do you want?  Well that's how many fat quarters you need.  I like that.

Make welcome a very important guest.....Mary Elizabeth Kinch

Quilters' Guild Acadienne......we are in for a treat with  nationally recognized speaker, Mary Elizabeth Kinch coming in for our October 25th guild meetings.   Mary Elizabeth will share her enthusiasm about our quilting heritage and  her experiences as a quilter.  Her workshops Friday and Saturday will allow her to no doubt stretch our traditional boundaries.  Yes, Mary Elizabeth says she believes in 'quilting with abandon'  while creating quilts with a subtle salute to the past.

Mary Elizabeth describes herself as a fabric designer, teacher and speaker who has co-authored two best-selling books, "Small Blocks, Stunning Quilts" and "Small Pieces, Spectacular Quilts."   Mary Elizabeth's work has been shown at international quilt shows and in quilting publications.  She has been a featured guest on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.

A treat indeed and we are so ready to welcome Mary Elizabeth to Quilters' Guild Acadienne.

Do You Podcast?

Oh, YES!  Well, here we go with  a 'Just Wanna Quilt' podcast.   Director at Tulane Law School, Professor Elizabeth Townsend Gard and Alex Anderson are in conversation about quilting!

Of interest to me was around minute 3 where Alex talks about taking a quilt-making class.  Yes, even when we know how to quilt, there's always something to learn from other quilt instructors.

And at minute 6ish.....on the concerns of the diminishing number of quilt shops.  With the resurgence of the craft of quilting 15-20 years ago the marketplace became saturated with new quilt shops and  fabric manufactures and is now in the natural trend of settling itself out in the competitive marketplace.

Other comments that caught my ear:

  •  About working from home:  Why you might loose friends when you tell them you're working.....when they know darn well they called you at home!
  • About reluctance:  "Alex, you are not a quitter.....always walk through the door."  John Anderson to Alex many years ago on her indecision about hosting the (then) new idea -  HGTV's quilt show.
  • About respect and understanding:  When children recognize and respect that the parent has a life too....Alex's daughter doesn't ask her to babysit a sick child, knowing that Grandma can't get sick.
  • About copyright:  When your project gets changed slightly and published by another as their own.....it's not worth the copyright infringement fight.
  • On the topic of shopping local.....Alex says she is one of the lucky who has 8 quilt shops within her comfortable driving radius, so when she knows what she wants, she'll call each shop to see if they have the item. If one has what she wants/needs, she drives. If not, she shops online.
  • Always be an ambassador for quilting, even when the lines are blurred.
And, the lines are often blurred....

Enjoyed every minute of it. There are so many more  "Just Wanna Quilt" podcasts.  Go there.
