Yesterday Revisited BOM 4: Old Maid's Puzzle

For such an old quilt block, recognized by most quilt makers, Diane says she didn't find a lot of history while researching the Old Maid's Puzzle quilt block.

Old Maid Puzzle quilt block ideas and designs found on Pinterest

That's okay, it is such a delightful block and one that can be set in so many different colorways and block settings, that historical info isn't always required for us to know that it's a genuine antique and one we'll have fun stitching.

inspiring to become ~

"When I am an old woman, I will do patchworks"  a quote from Edrica Huws whose life quite nearly spanned a century:  1907-1999.

Edrica Huws, a Londoner.  It was not until after her death that she became widely acclaimed.....the quilting world realized how remarkable the work was.

"It is splendid if there is some inner tension,
a hint of disorder
being controlled.
That, to me, is the essence
of an aesthetic experience."

                              Edrica Huws

Bottles on Garden Table - 1983

Tone, not color, was the most important element in her patchworks.  Not quite quilts, there being only two layers, and not quite paintings - while from a distance, her works appear to be more paintings than fabric patchworks.

Life is a blur, and then you get old and make patchworks.

Inside & Outside Pointy Binding

Every now and then a quilt deserves points....which, of course, means an inside and outside pointy binding.  What?  How do we do that?  Laura  Ann Coia with Sew Very Easy shares her experience on attaching a binding that isn't a straight line with a 45 degree corner.

Now, there's no holding us back.  Together we can do this thanks to Sew Very Easy where Laura posts videos twice weekly.

Who's Stealing What???

Don't let  your creative energy be stolen!  This All People Quilt article "5 things that zap creative energy" was definitely worth reading and thinking about.

Here's a brief take on who APQ posted as the worst creative stealers:
  • Enemy No. 1:  Information Overload.  Yes, you guessed it - the internet.  As inspiring as it is, the internet will become a creative enemy unless the time spent there isn't brought under control.
  • Enemy No. 2:  Workspace Clutter.  It's difficult to be creative amidst chaos. Take time to declutter to allow creativity to be welcomed into a clean space.
  • Enemy No. 3:  Multi-tasking.  "But I have so much on my plate!"   The key is to set aside time for each task.....and that includes time for creativity.
  • Enemy No. 4:  Your Inner Perfectionist.  Focus on enjoying the pleasure each step in the process gives rather having a perfect conclusion.
  • Enemy No. 5:  Deadlines.  They cannot always be eliminated, but they can be foreseen.  Procrastination is the deadline enemy.
Yes, I've paraphrased the All People Quilt article, that's why you should go there to read more about how to avoid  letting that creative energy be stolen.

This is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge and confront a personal creative enemy, whether it's one of the enemies listed above or fear of failure, lack of funds, or perhaps not enough space. Do we put that enemy on stage to get all the attention? Or do we become proactive - become the director, the orchestra leader to keep the performance in line and on time for the perfect ending.

Spotlight Suzy Quilts ~

Suzy Quilts.  She's smart....she's talented and she shares her knowledge and love of quilting with us in her sewing tutorials, product reviews, design inspiration and quilt patterns.  Her first introduction to QGA's blog was here where we learned how to fix fabric bleed.  But today, we'll delight in her newest quilt pattern.

I'm loving this campfire quilt pattern by Suzy Williams @ Suzy Quilt.  Take a look at the samples where every test quilter chose different fabrics and then watched as a totally fabulous quilt came together.
